Varanasi Tourism

Varanasi, or Benaras, (also known as Kashi) is considered one of the oldest living cities in the world. Located in the state of Uttar Pradesh, it is the oldest city and holiest of pilgrimages in the world. Mark Twain, the famous English author wrote: "Benaras is older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend and looks twice as old as all of them put together". Varanasi – The land where experience and discovery reach the ultimate bliss. The divine grace of this city lies in unique combination of physical, metaphysical and supernatural elements.

Mythological legend has it that Kashi is the ‘original ground’ created by Lord Shiva and Parvati, upon which they stood at the beginning of time. Varanasi, glorified by myth and legend and sanctified by religion, the temples and shrines, hymns and mantras, and the refreshing dip in the holy waters of Ganges gently splashing at the Ghats, is an experience in emancipation of the body and soul. The much-quoted Sanskrit Shloka proclaims ‘ Kashiyam maranam mukti’ (death in Kashi is Liberation).

It is in the heart of this city there stands in its fullest majesty the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in which is enshrined the Jyotirlinga of Shiva, Vishweshwara or Vishwanatha. The Temple has been visited by all great saints- Adi Shankaracharya, Ramkrishna Paramhansa, Swami Vivekanand, Goswami Tulsidas, Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati, Guru Nanak and several other spiritual personalities.
